Wool fibers may “shrink” when wet or when dried with. So how can you avoid this problem?
Make a Stencil - Before washing your sweater, lay it on a poster board or white paper (like the back of wrapping paper) and draw around the sweeter so you know what size it should be.
Block and Dry - After properly washing your sweater, lay it on a clean, dry towel and gently squeeze out the excess water. Do not wring it out or you may mis-shape it. Place the wet sweater on the stencil and pat it out to the proper shape. Talk gently to the sweater. Encourage it to get back in shape. Square the shoulders, place the sleeves parallel to the body and square the hem to be in alignment. You may use a fan to speed up the drying process a little.
All sweaters will form “pills” from normal wearing. Pills occur as the fibers break and ball up on the sweater. You may remove these by holding the sweater flat in your hand and slicing them off with a razor. There are also small devices you can buy similar to an electric razor that work well.
