More Tips on Caring for Wool Sweaters

Posted by Matt Whitehurst

Wool fibers may “shrink” when wet or when dried with. So how can you avoid this problem?

Make a Stencil - Before washing your sweater, lay it on a poster board or white paper (like the back of wrapping paper) and draw around the sweeter so you know what size it should be.

Block and Dry - After properly washing your sweater, lay it on a clean, dry towel and gently squeeze out the excess water. Do not wring it out or you may mis-shape it. Place the wet sweater on the stencil and pat it out to the proper shape. Talk gently to the sweater. Encourage it to get back in shape. Square the shoulders, place the sleeves parallel to the body and square the hem to be in alignment. You may use a fan to speed up the drying process a little.

Sweater Pilling

AdobeStock_84557246.jpegAll sweaters will form “pills” from normal wearing. Pills occur as the fibers break and ball up on the sweater. You may remove these by holding the sweater flat in your hand and slicing them off with a razor. There are also small devices you can buy similar to an electric razor that work well.

Common Stains on Women's Dry Cleaning

Posted by Matt Whitehurst

Everyone has stains on their clothes at some point, but there are some stains that are specific to either men or women.  Men are more likely to suffer from sweat stains, for example, female stains, ladies stains, deodorant stains, makeup stainswhile women's clothing is the only place you will find a perfume stain.

Two other substances that often force women to go to the dry cleaner are make-up and deodorant.  Many females like to smell nice and feel pretty, but the materials used can be very bad for clothing.

Don't fret, however.  Before rushing off to the dry cleaner, try these at-home remedies.  For the best chance of success, treat the stain as soon as you notice it.  The longer it sets, the harder it will be to remove!

Most types of make-up materials can be removed through a simple process.  First, dampen the stained area and then rub it with a traditional bar of soap.  Use your thumbs to rub the soap into the stain, and then rinse in warm water.  If the stain is persistent, soak the garment in a presoak substance and then launder as normal.

Deodorant and Antiperspirant:

Sweat stains are unpleasant, but are deodorant stains that much better?  To eliminate this common problem, first towel off as much of the white as you can.  Use a dry towel, as well as a damp towel, for added strength.

Dilute a spot stain remover with warm water and then use a sponge to apply the solution to the remaining white area.  Rinse the garment again, and repeat until the white has disappeared.

Sometimes antiperspirants can damage the color of a garment, but you can restore the color by using ammonia.  Those garments made from silk or wool will require diluted ammonia.  After application, launder the garment in the highest temperature recommended, and watch those stains disappear!

If your stain has set beyond at-home repair, bring it to our experienced dry cleaners and we'll see what we can do!

5 Clothing Care Tips From Your Dry Cleaner

Posted by Matt Whitehurst

How To Keep Your Clothes In Great Shape

Chances are that, if you're reading this blog, you already know the importance of clothing care labels.  These labels will tell you the best strategies for keeping a clothing care tips, dry cleaning tips, garment care tipsgarment in perfect condition and ensuring that it looks just as good now as when you bought it a year ago!

There is much more to know, however, about keeping your clothing in the best condition when dry cleaning, and this article will go over five of them!

1) Don't leave your clothes in the car!

One problem that we've experienced frequently is damage to clothes caused by the sun.  This often happens when customers throw their clothing in the back of the car when planning to take them to the dry cleaner.  Life is unpredictable, however, and things may come up that postpone that dry cleaning trip, therefore exposing your clothing to excessive sunlight. This can lead to fading and damage due to heat, so plan accordingly!

2) Explain stains to the dry cleaner

Don't simply drop your clothing off in a bundle and hope for the best.  Certain strategies are used for certain stains, so giving the dry cleaner as much information as possible will help guarantee that the stain is handled appropriately.  If you use a dry cleaning pickup and delivery service, pin a note to the garments to make sure your dry cleaner knows where the stain is and what caused it.

3) Take care of shoulder pads

Garments with shoulder pads can be very dangerous because they are easily detached and lost.  If your shoulder pads velcro into the garment, or can easily be slipped out, be sure to remove them at home.  If not, secure them with safety pins before bringing to the dry cleaner.  This will ensure they keep their shape and do not bunch up or become deformed.

4) Be careful when applying perfume or cologne

Apply them to your BODY rather than your CLOTHING.  These substances are secret stainers, and can cause discoloration due to the alcoholic ingredients.  Hairspray is also dangerous to clothes, and should be used carefully.

5) Don't be a stranger!

Dry cleaners appreciate it when their customers are involved, asking questions and making conversation to lighten the mood.  Being a friend to your service providers will only benefit you in the long run, and it couldn't hurt to create a personal connection between the dry cleaner and your garments.

If you have any questions about the above tips, feel free to ask!

Treating Collar Stains in Dress Shirts - Tips from Your Dry Cleaner

Posted by Matt Whitehurst

Tips from your dry cleaner about collar stains on your dress shirts

Ring Around the Collar:

It's not a new children's game, it's a major dry cleaning concern.  Both dress shirt wearers and some professional dry cleaners worry about ring around the collar, as it is a frequent occurrence and can be very difficult to clean.

Any quick Google search of the "ring around the collar" phrase will bring up numerous websites offering home remedies for this unfortunate the of staining, but home remedies are usually risky.  They can be especially risky when you are dealing with a delicate fabric that may stretch or warp after touching certain cleaning materials.

Even with the most advanced at-home laundry techniques, ring around the collar remains a steady problem for many people.  From white-collar professionals to high school students, and from men to women, this problem seems to affect everyone at some time or another.  We can't have everyone running out to buy new clothes just because of an unsightly collar stain, however, so it's a good thing that there are high-powered cleaning products available to dry cleaners to address problems like this.

Remedies for Collar Stains

Unlike at-home remedies and materials, dry cleaning materials are designed to be delicate on clothes, while remaining tough on stains.  For example, a specialty product used by dry cleaners called Collar Power, contains concentrated materials at quantities up to three times that of similar products.

Not only is this product incredibly strong, but it has a specialty spraying applicator to ensure even coverage.  It also works on much more than the collar of a shirt, though that is the quality that gives it its name.  Collar Power is also a successful way to clean khakis, which are known for holding stains.

Products of this nature are not only difficult to get, but they are difficult to use safely and correctly.  Dry cleaners have been trained to use specialty cleaning products, so we don't recommend you seek this product out.  You can, however, rest assured that your clothing is in good hands with us.  Dry cleaners are familiar with ring around the collar, and the best ways to deal with it.

All Dry Cleaners Don't Pre-Treat Dress Shirt Collars

One other bit of information.  All dry cleaners don't use the products or pre-treat for cuff and collar stains at all.  Don't expect to get this type of treatment for your dress shirts from "low cost" dry cleaners.  They can't afford to purchase or spend the time applying this type of treatment to dress shirts.

You should get to relax at home, not worry about how you're going to remove the discoloration from your shirt.  Let us do the worrying, so you don't have to!
