Do It Yourself Carpet Cleaning
How To Keep Carpets In Great Shape
Keeping a carpet clean in-between professional cleanings can be quite a chore. Many people choose hardwood floors or tile because of the cleaning difficulty carpet provides. However, if you are living in a carpeted home then you may want to follow a few of the tips below to keep your carpet as clean as possible until the time for professional cleaning arises.
1. Do not wear shoes on the carpet
Yes, this can be a little difficult to strictly follow and may get you a few strange looks by guests but it is a great way to keep the majority of the dirt off your carpet. If you can’t implement this rule or don’t want to then try putting a heavy duty mat just inside your front door and have people thoroughly wipe their feet before they enter any further. If you can’t prevent it, at least attempt to minimize the damage.
2. Vacuum as much as possible
If you have the time, try to vacuum once every other day. If you have to settle for once a week due to a busy life style then just make sure you vacuum on the day of the week you set aside for vacuuming. The more often you can vacuum, the fresher your carpet will stay.
3. Clean stains quickly
If there is a spill on your carpet, clean it as soon as possible. The longer you let a spill sit, the more likely it is going to stain. Use spot cleaners when you initially clean the stain to minimize the possibility of a stain.
4. Use mild soaps or detergents for stains
When spot cleaning, use dish detergent, vinegar, or some other type of mild soaps rather than a chemical cleanser. If you do decide to use a chemical cleanser, test it in a hidden area first to see what effect it will have on your carpet.
5. Keep an eye on carpet stains
After cleaning a stain, check the spot about 24 hours later to see if the spot is wicking. Wicking is when liquid sits at the bottom of your carpet. This means you only cleaned the surface of the carpet when you cleaned the spot earlier. To keep this from occurring, spread a towel over the spill area and place something heavy on top of the towel. Let it sit for about 24 hours and then clean the spot just as you usually would.
6. Get your carpet professionally cleaned regularly
Lastly, be sure to have your carpet steam cleaned every six months to keep it looking new and let the professionals get any stubborn stains out.
Follow these simple tips and your carpet will stay looking brand new for decades to come.
